D – THE CIRCUS AND PHYSICAL THEATRE SCHOOL OF TORRELAVEGA

The idea of a Circus and Physical Theatre School in Torrelavega, Cantabria, northern Spain was born from the desire to promote and develop this art form in our region. To maintain and advance modern circus and the culture which surrounds it in Cantabria, Malabaracirco see the need for centres of learning, practice and representation of these arts. The Circus School promotes dedication, physical fitness and skill by means of a fun activity which unites sport, art and theatre.

Over the last decade or so, Street Theatre and Circus festivals have become an established part of our cultural calendar thus creating the interest and a need for teaching and training in this field. Taking as examples other initiatives throughout the country (Madrid, Barcelona, Alcorcón, Malaga, Valencia…)our proposal forms part of a network of similar projects in Spain and the rest of the world.

Malabaracirco have been giving workshops and courses as well as receiving constant training in circus techniques over the last ten years. We see the importance of consolidating not only our personal work but creating a common space where these activities and this form of cultural expression can flourish.

Two of our members have completed circus courses in Circomedia, Bristol and Carampa, Madrid, studying similar areas to those proposed in the Circus School of Torrelavega and gaining diplomas in teaching circus skills to both children and adults.

The Circus School provides an immediate benefit for the wider society of Torrelavega and Cantabria, forging links with the local community and enriching the socio-cultural fabric of the city and region. The Circus School offers various activities such as the End of Course Show and outreach programmes.
